The Nation at The New School – Jeremy Scahill on Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield

In ‘Dirty Wars’, Jeremy Scahill, author of the ‘New York Times’ best-seller ‘Blackwater’, takes us inside America’s new covert wars. The foot soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies. Drawn from the ranks of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force, former Blackwater and other private security contractors, the CIA’s Special Activities Division and the Joint Special Operations Command ( JSOC), these elite soldiers operate worldwide, with thousands of secret commandos working in more than one hundred countries. Funded through black budgets,” Special Operations Forces conduct missions in denied areas, engage in targeted killings, snatch and grab individuals and direct drone, AC-130 and cruise missile strikes. While the Bush administration deployed these ghost militias, President Barack Obama has expanded their operations and given them new scope and legitimacy. ‘Dirty Wars’ follows the consequences of the declaration that “the world is a battlefield,” as Scahill uncovers the most important foreign policy story of our time.

From Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia and beyond, Scahill reports from the frontlines in this high-stakes investigation and explores the depths of America’s global killing machine. He goes beneath the surface of these covert wars, conducted in the shadows, outside the range of the press, without effective congressional oversight or public debate. And, based on unprecedented access, Scahill tells the chilling story of an American citizen marked for assassination by his own government. As US leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk, we are changing as a nation. Scahill unmasks the shadow warriors who prosecute these secret wars and puts a human face on the casualties of unaccountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons, cruise missile attacks and drone strikes, and whole classes of people branded as “suspected militants.” Through his brave reporting, Scahill exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.
Jeremy Scahill is National Security Correspondent for ‘The Nation’ magazine and author of the ‘New York Times’ best-seller ‘Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army’. He is a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute. He has reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, the former Yugoslavia, and elsewhere across the globe. Scahill is a frequent guest on a wide array of programs, appearing regularly on ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’, ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’, and ‘Democracy Now!’ He has also appeared on ‘Fresh Air’, ABC ‘World News’, CBS ‘Evening News’, NBC ‘Nightly News’, CNN, PBS ‘NewsHour’, and Bill Moyers Journal. Scahill’s work has sparked several Congressional investigations and won some of journalism’s highest honors. He was twice awarded the prestigious George Polk Award, in 1998 for foreign reporting and in 2008 for his book ‘Blackwater’. He is also a producer and writer of the film ‘Dirty Wars’, selected for the US documentary competition at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Review
“Dirty Wars will earn its place in history as one of the most important pieces of literature related to over a decade of failed American foreign policy strategy that continues to exist to this day. It’s also one of the most grounded and thoroughly researched books I’ve read on the subject of covert U.S. operations in the 21st Century. A must read for anyone that cares about this country and the direction we are heading.”
Brandon Webb, retired member of Navy SEAL Team Three, former lead sniper instructor at the US Naval Special Warfare Command and author of the New York Times bestseller The Red Circle

“Dirty Wars tells us, with convincing detail and much new information, what has been done in the name of America since 9/11.”
Seymour Hersh, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist

“[One] of the best intelligence reporters on the planet…Scahill has covered the worldwide wanderings of JSOC task forces and their intersection for years, and he takes a deeper look at their expanded post 9/11 mission set. He has incredible sources…”
Marc Ambinder, editor-at-large of The Week

“Dirty Wars is the most thorough and authoritative history I’ve read yet of the causes and consequences of America’s post 9/11 conflation of war and national security. I know of no other journalist who could have written it: For over a decade, Scahill has visited the war zones, overt and covert; interviewed the soldiers, spooks, jihadists, and victims; and seen with his own eyes the fruits of America’s bipartisan war fever. He risked his life many times over to write this book, and the result is a masterpiece of insight, journalism, and true patriotism.”
Barry Eisler, novelist and former operative in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations

“There is no journalist in America who has exposed the truth about US government militarism more bravely, more relentlessly and more valuably than Jeremy Scahill. Dirty Wars is highly gripping and dramatic, and of unparalleled importance in understanding the destruction being sown in our name.”
Glenn Greenwald, New York Times best-selling author and Guardian columnist

“A surefire hit for fans of Blackwater and studded with intriguing, occasionally damning material.”
GA/SC COAST THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT…THEN INTO HAMPTON ROADS
AND THE LOWER VA EASTERN SHORE BY THE END OF DAY 1. ANDREA WILL
BECOME DRAWN INTO THE LONGWAVE TROUGH OVER THE NEXT 24-36
HOURS…WHICH GIVEN THE BAROCLINIC BOOST WILL ALLOW FOR A FAIRLY
QUICK NORTHWARD EXTENSION OF HEAVIER RAINFALL UP ALONG THE ERN
INCLUDE THE ATLC SEABOARD UP THROUGH NY AND SRN NEW
ENGLAND…GIVEN THE HEAVIER FRONTOGENETIC-AIDED RAINFALL EXPECTED
ANOMALOUS PW’S CONTINUES TO LIFT UP THE ERN SEABOARD THIS
AFTERNOON… AS VALUES UP TO 2 INCHES ARE EXPECTED ALL THE WAY UP
INTO COASTAL PTNS OF SRN NEW ENGLAND THROUGH DAY ONE. 30 HOUR
AREAL-AVERAGE AMOUNTS BTWN 18Z TODAY AND 00Z SAT ARE EXPECTED TO
RANGE FROM 3 TO 5 INCHES FROM SERN GA/ERN SC INTO SRN NC…WITH
2-3+ INCHES INTO THE DELMARVA AND NJ. HIGHER AMOUNTS ARE
ANTICIPATED FARTHER N DURING DAY 2 (BEGINNING AT 00Z SAT).
ENVIRONMENT WELL N AND W OF ANDREA’S TRACK…AND AS SUCH WILL LEAD
TO A SECOND MAXIMA OF RAINFALL ACROSS THE ELEVATED TERRAIN FROM
WPC NOTED AREAL AVERAGE AMOUNTS IN THE 1-2 INCH RANGE IN 24 HOURS
OVER THESE AREAS…WITH THE SETUP CONDUCIVE TO LOCALLY HIGHER
THE LOWER FFG OVER THE MOUNTAINS.
…LOWER MS VLY…
THE COMBINATION OF A LINGERING MCV ALONG WITH THE BROADER-SCALE
HEIGHT FALLS WILL ALLOW FOR MOD TO LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL FROM ERN
TX THROUGH LA AND SRN MS. HIGHEST AREAL AVERAGE AMOUNTS…1 TO 1.5
INCHES…ARE EXPECTED IN THIS AREA…MAINLY CLOSER TO THE COAST
(SOUTH OF THE CURRENT SFC FRONTAL BNDRY) WHERE THE BEST INSTBY AND
LLVL INFLOW/MSTR CONVERGENCE EXISTS.
DAYS 2/3…
THE 12Z GUIDANCE…WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE NAM…CLUSTERS FAIRLY
WELL AT THE SURFACE WITH THE LATEST OFFICIAL NHC TRACK FOR ANDREA.
UNFORTUNATELY THIS AGREEMENT WITHIN THE MODEL THE PMSL FIELDS DID
NOT TRANSLATE OVER TO THEIR QPFS. THE GFS WAS A PARTICULAR
OUTLIER ON DAY 2 AS IT APPEARS TO SUFFER FROM GRIDSCALE FEEDBACK
PROBLEMS EARLY ON AND THEREFORE DISCOUNTED ITS VERY HEAVY AMOUNTS
SOUTHWEST OF ANDREA OVER EASTERN VA. THE GFS IS ALSO ALONE AND
WAS NOT FOLLOWED WITH THE HEAVY AMOUNTS IT GENERATES FROM THE
SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS TO THE NORTHERN MID ATLANTIC COAST ON DAY 2.
THE GFS IS THE ONLY MODEL TO STRENGTHEN A SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND
ITS SURFACE REFLECTION AS ITS LIFTS NORTHEASTWARD OUT OF THE LOWER
MS VALLEY ON FRI…MOVING QUICKLY ON THE HEELS OF ANDREA THROUGH
THE MID ATLANTIC AND NORTHEAST. THAT SAID…A BLEND OF THE UKMET
WITH 00/12Z ECMWF WAS GENERALLY FOLLOWED WITH RESPECT TO ANDREA
AND THE AFOREMENTIONED UPSTREAM WAVE. EMBEDDED WITHIN THE
PROGRESSIVE SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW BETWEEN THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE AND
AN UPSTREAM TROUGH ACROSS SOUTHEASTERN CANADA/GREAT LAKES…ANDREA
IS FORECAST TO MOVE QUICKLY FROM THE NORTHERN MID ATLANTIC COAST
INTO THE CANADIAN MARITIMES PROVINCES ON DAY 2. BUT BEFORE
EXITING OFF TO THE EAST…ANDREA CAN BE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE A
SWATH OF HEAVY AMOUNTS ON THE ORDER OF 1-3 INCHES FROM THE JERSEY
SHORE TO DOWNEAST MAINE. WELL SOUTH OF THE CENTER…MOISTURE AND
ENERGY EMBEDDED WITHIN DEEP SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW WILL CONTINUE TO
ENCOURAGE LOCALLY HEAVY AMOUNTS ACROSS FL. REFER TO NHC GUIDANCE
FOR THE LATEST INFO REGARDING ANDREA.
…PLAINS TO THE MS VALLEY…
STRONG UPPER DIVERGENCE AHEAD OF A MID LEVEL SHORTWAVE/UPPER JET
DIGGING THROUGH THE NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS FRI NIGHT/SAT MORNING IS
FORECAST TO INTERACT WITH DEEPER MOISTURE ALONG A STRONG SOUTHERLY
LOW LEVEL JET TO ENCOURAGE THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONVECTION PRODUCING
LOCALLY HEAVY AMOUNTS OVER PARTS OF THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL
PLAINS. THIS SHORTWAVE IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DIGGING DOWNSTREAM
OF A STRONG RIDGE CENTERED OVER THE SOUTHWEST…CLOSING OFF A MID
LEVEL CENTER NEAR THE MID MS/MS VALLEYS ON SUN. STRONG MOISTURE
CONVERGENCE AHEAD OF AN AMPLIFYING SFC/LOW LEVEL WAVE ALONG WITH
THE UPPER FORCING IS EXPECTED TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRONG
CONVECTION PRODUCING HEAVY AMOUNTS CENTERED OVER THE MID MO/MS
VALLEY SAT EVENING. SCATTERED CONVECTION WITH LOCALLY HEAVY
AMOUNTS IS ALSO POSSIBLE FURTHER TO THE SOUTH ALONG A TRAILING
COLD FRONT EXTENDING BACK INTO OK. TO ADDRESS WHAT BECOMES A
RATHER SIGNIFICANT MODEL SPREAD BY THE END OF THE PERIOD…THE WPC
FORECAST FOLLOWED A BLEND OF THE GFS/UKMET/00Z ECMWF THROUGH MUCH
OF THE PERIOD…DISCOUNTING THE NAM/12Z ECMWF WHICH FELL ON THE
LEAST/MOST AMPLIFIED SIDES OF THE GUIDANCE RESPECTIVELY.

Doctors are “pulling ball bearings out of people in the emergency room,” suggesting that the bombs were designed to propel shrapnel, a terrorism expert briefed on the investigation told CNN’s Deborah Feyerick.

As news of the reported explosions in Boston continues to unfold, many online are criticising the rush to circulate graphic images on both social and mainstream media.

A person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on said the explosives were put in 6-liter kitchen pressure cookers, hidden in black duffel bags and left on the ground. They were packed with shrapnel, the person said.

The person said law enforcement officials have some of the bomb components but do not yet know what was used to set off the explosives.

Earlier, a doctor treating the wounded appeared to corroborate the person’s account, saying one of the victims was maimed by what looked like ball bearings or BBs.

“We’ve removed BBs and we’ve removed nails from kids. One of the sickest things for me was just to see nails sticking out of a little girl’s body,” said Dr. David Mooney, director of the trauma center at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Two children remain in critical condition at the hospital with serious leg injuries. Mooney said that tourniquets applied by emergency responders at the race saved the children’s lives.

Area hospitals say at least 132 are injured, including eight children.

Two explosions happened at about 2:50 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race’s nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.

Boston.com journalist reports “blood everywhere,” people missing limbs.

From deep sleep I hear a faint Cuckoo clock going off in the computer lab in the other room. Jump out of bed, feed the Siamese cat who is growling like a tiger sleeping next to me in its travel carrier, make a cold cup of Chai tea loaded with black tea and put waffles in toaster and microwave some frozen blueberries as a topping. Ok now its time to jump on the computer and login to the onyx system to participate in Formidable Footprint – A Neighborhood Tabletop Exercise – Earthquake. First problem of the day I cannot login so I reset the password and then login using the same password emailed to me. I was warned i had to use Internet Explorer to participate Internet Explorer is only available for Windows, not Mac. If you have to use a webpage that requires Internet Explorer, you can use compatibility mode: 1. Go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced and tick Show Develop menu in menu bar. 2. Open Develop > User Agent and press Internet Explorer 9 (Windows). If it doesn’t help, buy Windows 7 or 8 and install it in VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, VirtualBox or through Apple Boot Camp. Ha I totally forgot about that and went through the entire exercise in standard Safari 6.03. Having a wide-band Internet Cable service has its advantages 50Mbit/sec down 5Mbit/sec up Most of the questions that came up during the excercise I either had to reference my documentation on hand or look stuff up on the net. To learn more about Formidable Footprint or create a login account http://www.onxsystem.com

Seamless Internet Access For Free (video) Share your mobile Internet among all your devices. So where’s the catch? Well, you’ll have to share your data connection too. Sounds fair to me. To start, just download and install Open Garden on your Android smartphone (Apple will not allow it on the App Store. Stupid!), Mac or Windows PC. If you’re on AT&T, you’ll have to get it directly on the Open Garden website. The carrier asked Google to hide it from its customers on Google Play. Another stupid anti-consumer move.

Seamless sharing, faster connection

Once running, the software will then automatically look for other Open Garden users. If you have already a data connection, because you’re at a Starbucks or using your 3G/4G smartphone, it’ll automatically get shared with others, although your data gets priority.

Your connection speed could also get faster as Open Garden will ‘bond’ available bandwidth from nearby community members and make it available to you.

Seamless connectivity allows people to connect any supported device to the mesh and thus to the Internet with no effort or configuration. Install, done. No buttons, no pairing, no manual discoverability. Open Garden can use different physical ways to connect in general; today’s version concentrates on Bluetooth. Bluetooth normally requires to manually put one of the devices into discoverable state, which only lasts a few minutes. We eliminated the need for this, saving battery, improving privacy, and, most importantly, allowing devices to connect with no user intervention.

Version 2.0 brings multi-path access. Normally today, you access the Internet using only one path. For example, when your phone gets on Wi-Fi, it no longer uses its 4G connection; if you are in an area with multiple Wi-Fi hotspots, you only use one. We are introducing a way to access the Internet over multiple paths at once, improving speed and reliability, and also eliminating configuration choices: you will no longer need to pick how you connect, since you will simply use multiple ways.

Once connected, devices find a path to the Internet also completely automatically. If a path fails, a new one will be chosen; if necessary, new connections will be established. The network is self-healing and self-forming. Each of the nodes operates only with local knowledge; together, they build a network using a probabilistic distributed algorithm.

When there is no direct Internet connection, devices will access the Internet through chains of other devices. Again, if necessary, chains will grow to reach the Internet.

Roads and Schools Open, Shelter Closed but FLASH FLOOD WATCH STILL IN EFFECT

Maui Civil Defense announced that there are no road closures Upcountry at this time according to Maui police. The roads are still wet and slick so please use caution when driving.

Also the Department of Education has announced no school closures. At this the the Red Cross emergency shelter at Hannibal Tavares Community Center is closed and residents have returned to their homes.

In the meantime please be aware that a FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT FOR MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND…

AN UNSTABLE AIR MASS…TOGETHER WITH WATER VAPOR STREAMING FROM
THE EAST…WILL CONTINUE TO BRING HEAVY SHOWERS AND THE POSSIBILITY OF
THUNDERSTORMS TO MAINLY WINDWARD SLOPES OF MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND THROUGH LATE TONIGHT.

* STREAMING HEAVY SHOWERS WILL RAISE A HIGH RISK OF FLOODING
MAINLY ALONG WINDWARD SLOPES…WHILE AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS
WILL THREATEN FLOODING ALONG LEE SLOPES.

* AVOID CAMPING OR HIKING NEAR STREAMS AND LOW-LYING FLOOD-PRONE
AREAS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS VERY DANGEROUS. REMEMBER
THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE RAINING HEAVILY WHERE YOU ARE FOR A
FLASH FLOOD TO REACH YOU.

MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE
ACTION IF A FLASH FLOOD WARNING IS ISSUED.

Huffington Post Reports: MOSCOW — With a blinding flash and a booming shock wave, a meteor blazed across the western Siberian sky Friday and exploded with the force of 20 atomic bombs, injuring more than 1,000 people as it blasted out windows and spread panic in a city of 1 million.

While NASA estimated the meteor was only about the size of a bus and weighed an estimated 7,000 tons, the fireball it produced was dramatic. Video shot by startled residents of the city of Chelyabinsk showed its streaming contrails as it arced toward the horizon just after sunrise, looking like something from a world-ending science-fiction movie.

The largest recorded meteor strike in more than a century occurred hours before a 150-foot asteroid passed within about 17,000 miles (28,000 kilometers) of Earth. The European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection between the asteroid and the Russian meteor – just cosmic coincidence.

The meteor above western Siberia entered the Earth’s atmosphere about 9:20 a.m. local time (10:20 p.m. EST Thursday) at a hypersonic speed of at least 33,000 mph (54,000 kph) and shattered into pieces about 30-50 kilometers (18 to 32 miles) high, the Russian Academy of Sciences said. NASA estimated its speed at about 40,000 mph, said it exploded about 12 to 15 miles high, released 300 to 500 kilotons of energy and left a trail 300 miles long.

“There was panic. People had no idea what was happening,” said Sergey Hametov of Chelyabinsk, about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow in the Ural Mountains.

“We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound,” he told The Associated Press by telephone.

The shock wave blew in an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in Chelyabinsk were damaged. At a zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

The Interior Ministry said about 1,100 people sought medical care after the shock wave and 48 were hospitalized. Most of the injuries were caused by flying glass, officials said.

Scientists estimated the meteor unleashed a force 20 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, although the space rock exploded at a much higher altitude. Amy Mainzer, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said the atmosphere acted as a shield.

The shock wave may have shattered windows, but “the atmosphere absorbed the vast majority of that energy,” she said.

Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Vladimir Purgin said many of the injured were cut as they flocked to windows to see what caused the intense flash of light, which momentarily was brighter than the sun.

There was no immediate word on any deaths or anyone struck by space fragments.

President Vladimir Putin summoned the nation’s emergencies minister and ordered immediate repairs. “We need to think how to help the people and do it immediately,” he said.

Some meteorite fragments fell in a reservoir outside the town of Chebarkul, the regional Interior Ministry office said. The crash left an eight-meter (26-foot) crater in the ice.

Lessons had just started at Chelyabinsk schools when the meteor exploded, and officials said 258 children were among those injured. Amateur video showed a teacher speaking to her class as a powerful shock wave hit the room.

Yekaterina Melikhova, a high school student whose nose was bloody and whose upper lip was covered with a bandage, said she was in her geography class when a bright light flashed outside.

“After the flash, nothing happened for about three minutes. Then we rushed outdoors. … The door was made of glass, a shock wave made it hit us,” she said.

Russian television ran video of athletes at a city sports arena who were showered by shards of glass from huge windows. Some of them were still bleeding.

Other videos showed a long shard of glass slamming into the floor close to a factory worker and massive doors blown away by the shock wave.

Meteors typically cause sizeable sonic booms when they enter the atmosphere because they are traveling so much faster than the speed of sound. Injuries on the scale reported Friday, however, are extraordinarily rare.

“I went to see what that flash in the sky was about,” recalled resident Marat Lobkovsky. “And then the window glass shattered, bouncing back on me. My beard was cut open, but not deep. They patched me up. It’s OK now.”

Another resident, Valya Kazakov, said some elderly women in his neighborhood started crying out that the world was ending.

The many broken windows exposed residents to the bitter cold as temperatures in the city were expected to plummet to minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit) overnight. The regional governor put out a call for any workers who knew how to repair windows.

Russian-language hashtags for the meteorite quickly shot up into Twitter’s top trends.

“Jeez, I just woke up because my bed started shaking! The whole house is moving!” tweeted Alisa Malkova.

Social media was flooded with video from the many dashboard cameras that Russians mount in their cars, in case of pressure from corrupt traffic police or a dispute after an accident.

The dramatic event prompted an array of reactions from prominent Russians.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, speaking at an economic forum in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, said the meteor could be a symbol for the forum, showing that “not only the economy is vulnerable, but the whole planet.”

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for his vehement statements, blamed the Americans.

“It’s not meteors falling. It’s the test of a new weapon by the Americans,” the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.

“At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies” to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Meteoroids are small pieces of space debris – usually parts of comets or asteroids – that are on a collision course with the Earth. They become meteors when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere, but if they survive the frictional heating and strike the surface of the Earth they are called meteorites.

NASA said the Russian fireball was the largest reported since 1908, when a meteor hit Tunguska, Siberia, and flattened an estimated 80 million trees. Chelyabinsk is about 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) west of Tunguska. The Tunguska blast, attributed to a comet or asteroid fragment, is generally estimated to have been about 10 megatons.

Scientists believe that a far larger meteorite strike on what today is Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula may have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. According to that theory, the impact would have thrown up vast amounts of dust that blanketed the sky for decades and altered the climate on Earth.

The object hailed from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, becoming a meteor as it streaked through the earth’s atmosphere, Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said.

Paul Chodas, research scientist at the Near Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said that ground telescopes would have needed to point in the right direction at the right time to spot Friday’s incoming meteor.

“It would be very faint and difficult to detect, not impossible, but difficult,” Chodas said.

The 150-foot space rock that safely hurtled past Earth at 2:25 p.m. EST Friday was dubbed Asteroid 2012 DA14 and was discovered a year ago. It came closer than many communication and weather satellites that orbit 22,300 miles up.

The asteroid was invisible to astronomers in the United States at the time of its closest approach on the opposite of the world. But in Australia, astronomers used binoculars and telescopes to watch the point of light speed across the clear night sky.

Jim Green, NASA’s director of planetary science, called the back-to-back celestial events an amazing display.

“This is indeed very rare and it is historic,” he said on NASA TV. “These fireballs happen about once a day or so, but we just don’t see them because many of them fall over the ocean or in remote areas. ”

Experts said the Russian meteor could have produced much more serious problems in the area hosting nuclear and chemical weapons disposal facilities.

Vladimir Chuprov of Greenpeace Russia noted that the meteor struck only 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Mayak nuclear storage and disposal facility, which holds dozens of tons of weapons-grade plutonium.

The panic and confusion that followed the meteor quickly gave way to typical Russian black humor and entrepreneurial instincts. Several people smashed in the windows of their houses in the hopes of receiving compensation, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Others quickly took to the Internet and put what they said were meteorite fragments up for sale.

One of the most popular jokes was that the meteorite was supposed to fall on Dec. 21, 2012 – when many believed the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world – but was delivered late by Russia’s notoriously inefficient postal service.

Dear Governor Abercrombie,

I am writing to voice my support for the renewable electricity standard that makes our state a leader in the nation’s growing clean energy economy.

Currently, we are one of 29 states that choose to require utilities obtain a percentage of their electricity from renewable sources, such as the wind and sun.

Studies show these smart energy policies are an effective and affordable way to downsize our reliance on imported fossil fuels, while keeping hard earned energy dollars local to create jobs and reducing pollution to protect the environment and public health.

I encourage you to support this policy that promotes the use of homegrown renewable energy, for the benefit of our state’s residents today and the prosperity of future generations.

Since 1992 I have worked to establish Maui as the environmental sciences center of the world lets not go backwards

Stop Special Interests from Repealing Renewable Energy in Hawaii

Dear Friends,

Currently, Hawaii is one of 29 states leading the transition to a clean energy economy by requiring utilities to obtain a certain percentage of their electricity from renewable sources, such as the sun and wind. But these highly effective clean energy policies, known as renewable electricity standards, are now threatened by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a Washington, DC-based special interest group funded by big polluters, including ExxonMobil and the Koch brothers.

Take action today to let politicians in your state know that you support renewable energy, not the agenda of out-of-state fossil fuel interests.

More than 20 comprehensive studies over the past decade have found that renewable electricity standards are an effective and affordable way to downsize our reliance on coal-burning power plants, the top source of carbon emissions that are the primary cause of global warming.

For years, ALEC has misled politicians by denying the role carbon emitted by human activities plays in warming our planet. Now, the legislation ALEC is pushing to repeal renewable electricity standards has been exposed as the handy work of the Heartland Institute, the same group behind last year’s offensive billboard campaign comparing those who accept the scientific consensus on global warming to “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski.

The good news is that ALEC’s war on science is backfiring. Dozens of corporations, including Coca-Cola and Wal-Mart, have stopped funding this special interest group in response to the concerns of thousands of informed citizens like you.

As politicians gear up for the 2013 legislative season, do your part to defend renewable energy today.

Together, we can make sure Hawaii remains a clean energy leader and send ALEC packing.

Humpback Whale Highway was bumper to bumper along the southern coast of Maui near Makena and Oneola Beach.

Now just to clarify I am referring to the Humpback Whale traffic in some cases as close as 500 meters from shoreline.

There has been a high surf warning for north facing shores today and the public lifeguards at Makena’s Big beach were broadcasting warnings over the megaphone to novice boogy boarders and tourists unaware of the power of the shoreline break today.

The photo enclosed was shot on a different day from the ridge overlooking south towards Maui’s Makena. (Big Beach)

Early this morning I was picked up in a shiny blue all terrain vehicle and was brought to the County of Maui Civil Defense Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

A small group assembled from Maui Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to participate in an online disaster preparedness exercise codenamed Formidable Footprint – A Neighborhood Tabletop Exercise- Wildfire.

The exercise scenario took place in a small simulated community of about 270 houses and less than 2,000 residents surrounded by farmland in which a raging fire traveling at about 17mph from the west headed towards the community.

There were numerous challenges in which we had x number of minutes to move through specific sections of the exercise. It started off with an introduction of the community with an interactive map displaying infrastructure such as houses, schools, gas stations, etc. There were a number of elements one had to absorb and apply towards directed action in a timely manner taking into consideration potential hazards and different threat levels.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

To learn more about CERT and and search for your local chapter please visit CERT

Gene Sharp Right Livelihood Award Speech

“for developing and articulating the core principles and strategies of nonviolent resistance and supporting their practical implementation in conflict areas around the world.”

Gene Sharp is the world´s foremost expert on nonviolent revolution and has been described as the “Machiavelli of nonviolence”. In a lifetime of academic work, he has established nonviolent action and people power as a successful means of political change. Sharp’s writings on nonviolent struggle have been used by social movements around the world, from the jungles of Burma to the streets of Serbia and Tahrir Square in Egypt during the Arab Spring.

Gene Sharp (born January 21, 1928) was a researcher at the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University, for nearly 30 years. He is a graduate of Ohio State University with a B.A. in social sciences and an M.A. in sociology, and of Oxford University with a D.Phil. in political theory.

In 1983, Gene Sharp founded the Albert Einstein Institution, to promote the study and strategic use of nonviolent action in conflicts. He currently serves as the Senior Scholar. The Albert Einstein Institution’s Executive Director is Jamila Raqib.

Sharp discovered as a graduate student that while historical accounts and research on violent conflict and military strategy were abundant, the successes of nonviolent actions had often been written out of the history books. To address this problem he began to study the historical cases where nonviolent means of struggle were used, in order to understand how the technique worked.

While writing his first book on Gandhi at 25 years old, Sharp was jailed for 9 months for conscientiously objecting to conscription for the Korean War. He discussed his decision to go to prison for his beliefs in letters to Albert Einstein who wrote a foreword to this first book.

While continuing his studies in Norway from 1957-60, Sharp began to analyse how nonviolent action operates in conflict, and to list specific methods of resistance. He studied Gandhian actions, looking for factors determining success and failure. His research work in Oslo included the resistance to the German occupation of Norway during World War 2, where evidence of nonviolent action had often previously been ignored.

Sharp argues that the major unresolved political problems of our time - dictatorship, genocide, war and social oppression - require us to rethink politics. He maintains that pragmatic, strategically planned, nonviolent struggle can be highly effective in ending oppression.

His writings have helped governments and social movements around the world plan and implement the use of successful nonviolent resistance. In 1990, Sharp advised the Swedish Ministry of Defence on their plans to incorporate a nonviolent resistance component into the existing military defence policy.

Sharp’s book Civilian-Based Defense was used by the Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian governments during their separation from the Soviet Union in 1991. Lithuanian Defence Minster Audrius Butkevicius declared at the time, “I would rather have this book than the nuclear bomb”.

At the request of democracy activists, Sharp travelled illegally into Burma in 1992 to teach workshops on nonviolent action to students, democracy activists and Karen rebel fighters.

A Burmese intellectual asked him to write an analysis that could be applied for the Burmese situation. Sharp resisted writing specifically for Burma but published a generic analysis in 1993 called From Dictatorship to Democracy. Simple to translate and easy to smuggle across borders this book would go on to become one of the seminal works for democracy activists across the world, translated into more than 34 languages on every continent.

Despite operating with modest funding for the past 8 years and working out of his home in East Boston, Gene Sharp has made From Dictatorship to Democracy and other key texts available for free online from the Albert Einstein Institution website. These texts have been studied by groups including Egypt’s April 6 Movement, Serbia’s Otpor, Georgia’s Kmara, Kyrgyzstan’s KelKel and Belarus’ Zubr in their efforts to effect change in their societies without the use of violence. Oleh Kryenko, one of the leaders of Ukraine’s ‘Orange Revolution’, said in 2004: “The bible of PORA has been the book of Gene Sharp, also used by OTPOR, it’s called From Dictatorship to Democracy.”

Since its release in 2004, the Farsi edition of From Dictatorship to Democracy has been downloaded thousands of times by Iranians. Access to Sharp’s writings peaked after the post-election ‘green uprising’ in 2009, and at the first court trial of activists arrested during the protests, Gene Sharp was cited (through his writings) as having influenced the activities of the Iranian opposition, which were described as having been planned in advance. One of the methods, which Sharp listed and the Iranian activists implemented, was for people to stay at home and paralyse a city as an expression of resistance against the regime.

In 2010, Sharp published Self-Liberation: A guide to Strategic Planning for Action to End a Dictatorship or Other Oppression, a curriculum designed to enable groups to self-reliantly develop grand strategies for their struggles. His latest book, Sharp’s Dictionary of Power and Struggle: Language of Civil Resistance in Conflicts is a reference work of key terms related to power and struggle, and was published by Oxford University Press in January 2012. His book How Nonviolent Struggle Works is forthcoming in Autumn 2012.

In 2011, How to Start a Revolution, a documentary focusing on Gene Sharp’s writings and their impact on resistance movements around the world, was released, and has since been viewed by millions around the world winning 8 international awards including a Scottish BAFTA. The film, written and directed by British filmmaker Ruaridh Arrow, contains powerful archival footage of the use of nonviolent action in Serbia, Iran, Egypt, and elsewhere, as well as interviews with various of Sharp’s associates.

This years Maui Chanukah Festival of the Lights 2012 took place December 12, 2012 featuring friends and family members of The Jewish Congregation of Maui was led by Rabbi David Glickman at Beit Shalom Synagogue located in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii.

Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Chanukah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.
The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Chanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical Menorah consists of eight branches with an additional raised branch. The extra light is called a shamash (Hebrew: שמש, “attendant”)and is given a distinct location, usually above or below the rest. The purpose of the shamash is to have a light available for use, as using the Chanukah lights themselves is forbidden.

What Goes Down Goes Down Must Come Up

For most of the past two decades, the NASA and European Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1 and Jason-2 satellites have tracked the gradual rise of the world’s ocean in response to global warming. In August 2011, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., and the University of Colorado in Boulder reported that global sea level rise had hit a speed bump (see “NASA Satellites Detect Pothole on Road to Higher Seas“).

The researchers found that between early 2010 and summer 2011, global sea level fell sharply, by about a quarter of an inch, or half a centimeter. Using data from the NASA/German Aerospace Center’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) spacecraft, they showed that the drop was caused by the very strong La Nina that began in late 2010. This periodic Pacific Ocean climate phenomenon changed rainfall patterns all over our planet, moving huge amounts of Earth’s water from the ocean to the continents, primarily to Australia, northern South America and Southeast Asia.

Now, a new paper published recently in the journal Geophysical Research Letters documents the effects of the 2010-11 La Nina on global sea level and updates the measurements. The result: as predicted, by mid-2012, global mean sea level had not only recovered from the more than 0.2 inches (5 millimeters) it dropped in 2010-11, but had resumed its long-term mean annual rise of 0.13 inches (3.2 millimeters) per year. Results of the new study are presented graphically at:http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/pia16294.html .

“The water the ocean ‘lost’ was compensated for rather quickly,” said lead study author Carmen Boening of JPL. “The newest data clearly indicate that the drop in 2010-11 was only temporary.”

JPL co-author Josh Willis added that, like clockwork, the long-term rise of the ocean marches on. “The dip in global sea levels, brought to us courtesy of a major La Nina event, was little more than a pothole in the long road toward a rising ocean and shrinking coastlines,” he said.

“In 2011, we detected a lot of water that was temporarily stored over land, causing severe flooding in some regions,” said JPL co-author Felix Landerer. “In 2012, we have seen much of this water find its way back into the ocean.”

At Strata RX 2012, we (NotOnly Dev) released a teaming (i.e. referral) graph — a project that details the connections between doctors, hospitals and other healthcare organizations in the US. This data set shows most of the connections between doctors, including referrals to specialist and what lab providers and hospitals they prefer to work with. It displays real names and and will eventually show every city.

With this crowdfunding, we plan on increasing the amount of data that we will release by an order of magnitude. We are calling this new, larger data set “DocGraph”.

This is a valuable data set for academics, scientists, or health policy junkies because it can be merged with other research data.

Our goal is to empower the patient, make the system transparent and accountable, and release this data to the people who can use it to revitalize our health system.

NotOnly Dev is a Health IT software incubator company formed by Fred Trotter, Rick Trotter and Ashish Patel. We are a “not-only-for-profit” company. Of course, we are still a for-profit endeavor, but we have a very specific social mission: To use software and data to empower patients. On some projects, we make money. On others our goal is to make patient’s lives better. Most of the time, we can find ways to do a little of both at the same time. You are welcome to hire us for your healthcare software development project. We encourage that.

This time-lapse animation shows Hurricane Sandy from the vantage point of geostationary orbit—35,800 km (22,300 miles) above the Earth. The image above shows Sandy on October 26, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. EDT, when light from the setting sun highlighted the structure of the clouds. At the time, maximum sustained winds were 75 miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour) according to the National Hurricane Center. The images were collected by NOAA’s GOES-14 satellite.
Time Machine broken after 10.7.5 update MacRumors Forums

I was attempting to backup today my 2011 MacBookPro internal ssd and the backup was unbelievably slow using usb 3 connection to the point that I aborted, gave up, reformatted my Time Machine drive and started looking around for solutions. Came across a thread on MacRumors Forums: Time Machine broken after 10.7.5 update MacRumors Forums

Thank God because my 100GB backup estimated time went from 24 hours to 36 minutes after following what dmax35 said

It’s a known spotlight issue. https://discussions.apple.com/message/19667005#19667005

http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disab…mac-os-x-lion/

If you disable Spotlight using the following command from within Terminal, Time Machine backups return to normal speed;

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

Once this has been resolved, you’ll be able to re-enable Spotlight with the following command;

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
