Since 1992 I
Paul G. Hugel and a team of volunteers have been working towards establishing Maui as the environmental sciences center of the world. In 2006 I have expanded my world view to visualize Maui as the environmental and peace center of the world. The Hawaiian Islands are the most remote island chain in the world separated by thousands of miles of open ocean from the nearest continent.
Humpback Whales come to Maui to breed and give birth. The biological diversity here on Maui is unique containing many species found no where else on the globe. Hawaii has been called the endangered species capitol of the world. There are more endangered species here on Maui than any where else. I feel that Maui is a natural laboratory for the study of rare & endangered species and hope to encourage research and conservation programs. Maui is also home to Science City atop
Haleakala Volcano here the
US Air Force Maui Optical & Supercomputing Site which includes the
Near Earth Object Program tracks tens of thousands of
orbiting objects larger than 5 centimeters and potentialy hazardous Near Earth Asteroids (
NEAT). Through publishing of environmental research and educational video here on Maui I hope to popularize Maui as the environmental sciences center of the world. Empowering individuals with technology for global video distribution is one method I am employing to build an environmentally conscious community on Maui.
I would like to bring together a team of women broadcasters. This project will be managed by women and not by
myself. We will be broadcasting four times per month from Maui using the Internet and my server access at Harvard University.
