THE GEOSTATIONARY SATELLITE /GOES-15/ THAT USUALLY PROVIDES IMAGERY OVER THE PACIFIC...INCLUDING THE CENTRAL PACIFIC AND HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...HAS SUFFERED A BAD MOMENTUM UNLOAD. THIS MEANS THAT THE SATELLITE IS CURRENTLY POINTED TOWARD THE SUN...AND IMAGERY IS UNAVAILABLE. THE LAST IMAGE RECEIVED FROM THIS SATELLITE WAS NEAR 1030 AM HST MARCH 21. ESTIMATED TIME OF RESTORAL IS UNKNOWN...BUT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE AT LEAST ANOTHER 24 HOURS. ALTHOUGH GOES-13... STATIONED FARTHER EAST...HAS BEEN PLACED INTO A FULL DISK IMAGING MODE...THESE IMAGES DO NOT PROVIDE DATA OVER THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. THIS OUTAGE ALSO AFFECTS THE RECEIPT OF OTHER OBSERVATIONAL DATA IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC...INCLUDING REPORTS FROM CERTAIN BUOYS...WIND AND RAIN GAGES.
A JAPANESE GEOSTATIONARY SATELLITE /MTSAT/ DOES PROVIDE COVERAGE OVER THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...AND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HONOLULU WILL BE EMPLOYING THIS DATA TO MONITOR ISLAND WEATHER. IN ADDITION...DATA FROM POLAR ORBITING SATELLITES WILL BE UTILIZED. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED AS IT IS RECEIVED FROM THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SATELLITE...DATA...AND INFORMATION SERVICE /NESDIS/. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. $$
