# Aloha from Maui

In 1989, the S.A.V.E. Program began. [Silicon Graphics staff](https://web.archive.org/web/19970605170802/http://www.sgi.com/SAVE/index.html) sought better tools for environmental research. The aim was to make advanced tech easy to use.

## NKO.ORG: Fast Forward to 1995

In 1995, Maui became home to the Maui S.A.V.E. Program. MHPCC, [Silicon Graphics Computers](https://web.archive.org/web/19970706202122/http://www.sgi.com/), and the program worked as a team. They used tech to address problems in the environment.

First, an SGI Indigo hosted nko.mhpcc.edu. Later, the site moved to nko.org. Also, NKO means No Ka Oi. It means the best. Thus, this name fits Maui.

Next, we made an early VR site. For example, users could explore Maui and the solar system. Also, it used Virtual Reality Modeling Language, or VRML, to show 3D worlds.

In 2002, I sent live video from the field in Maui over wireless Internet. Then, I was the first to stream this way with Maui Sky Fiber 3G devices.

### Pioneering Live Streaming

NKO.ORG also tested a [streaming server](https://web.archive.org/web/20000304181557/http://dolphin.nko.org/mbase/3showall.cgi). The team used QuickTime Streaming Server. We shared live video from Maui. Viewers saw land, events, and issues in the environment.

Today, we build AI systems with rules and guardrails. Also, they help with political science, court study, and social justice. In addition, we work on care for the land and the environment. Finally, we use cameras for 360-degree photos and video.

Beyond Maui, NKO.ORG supports disaster tech and IT work in [Hawaiʻi](https://nko.org/portfolio/kilauea-volcano-lower-east-rift-zone/) and beyond. Paul Garrett Hugel volunteers his skills. He helps with disaster response.
