Pioneering Environmental Technology

  • 1995: I led an independent research project at the Maui High Performance Computing Center. This joint effort with MHPCC, Silicon Graphics, and NKO.ORG developed one of the first internet-based 3D virtual reality GIS based sites.
  • Pioneered live streaming using MPEG formats and RealVideo with a network of high-performance SGI workstations.
  • 2002: Maui became the stage for the first wireless live streaming video using laptops and Maui Sky Fiber’s 3G technology. We continued this innovation with USB modems and even iPhone 3G live streaming.

Beyond Broadcasting: Disaster Response and Research

The Maui S.A.V.E. Program expanded its work to include:

  • Storm Tracking: We analyze large datasets like wind speed probabilities from the National Hurricane Center.
  • Disaster Relief: I volunteer with disaster relief organizations, including the American Red Cross.

Sharing Our World: Panoramic Views and Peace Efforts

We’re now:

  • Pioneering Panoramic Video: We produce and distribute panoramic 360-degree 4K video online (e.g., Youtube, Archive.org) to showcase environmental and peace initiatives globally.
  • Documenting Permafrost Research: We collaborated with the UAF Geophysical Institute Permafrost Lab, capturing research in Fairbanks, Alaska, with scientific panoramic imagery.

A Longstanding Vision: A Global Center for Peace and Environment

Since 1992, I’ve envisioned Maui, Hawaii, as a global hub for environmental science. Inspired by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s visit, this vision now encompasses establishing Maui as a center for both environmental and peace efforts.
