A multilateral summit on nuclear security and nonproliferation began today in Cairo, Egypt, ITAR-Tass reported (see GSN, Oct. 18).

The forum continues through Thursday and includes specialists from 50 organizations and nations, including the United States and European states.

The agenda includes countering nuclear terrorism, safeguarding fissile nuclear materials, and establishing the Middle East as a WMD-free zone — a goal reinforced at the 2010 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty review conference (see GSN, June 10; ITAR-Tass, Oct. 19).

Also to be considered is enacting other resolutions reached at the May NPT conference, ANSAmed reported. Among the agreed to nonproliferation actions at the conference were a commitment by the five nuclear powers — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — to expedite nuclear disarmament efforts, limit the role strategic weapons play in their military postures and report on their efforts in four years (see GSN, June 1; ANSAmed, Oct. 18).
