Scientific Analysis and Visualization of the Environment
The Maui S.A.V.E. Program:
Founded in 1989, the Scientific Analysis and Visualization of the Environment (S.A.V.E.) The program emerged as a response to a request from Silicon Graphics engineers. Their goal? To make advanced technology more accessible to researchers studying the environment.
Fast forward to 1995.
The beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii, became home to the Maui S.A.V.E. Program. This collaborative effort, involved the MHPCC, Silicon Graphics Computers, & the Maui S.A.V.E. Program itself. The goal aimed to leverage technology for a critical purpose: addressing environmental challenges.
Initially, an SGI Indigo workstation served as a web server, powering the early version of the website, nko.mhpcc.edu. This later evolved into the familiar and concise domain, https://nko.org. “NKO” draws inspiration from the Hawaiian phrase “No Ka Oi,” which translates to “the best.” This perfectly reflects the spirit of Maui, a place renowned for its unparalleled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Pioneering Live Streaming:
NKO.ORG embarked on a groundbreaking initiative. They beta-tested streaming server technology, ultimately becoming the first to live stream over the internet in Maui. Utilizing Quicktime Streaming Server, they captured and broadcasted live video footage from various locations across the island. This innovative approach allowed viewers to experience firsthand the stunning landscapes, vibrant cultural events, & even the environmental issues facing Maui.
Today, the Maui S.A.V.E. Program continues to push the boundaries by utilizing cutting-edge technology to promote sustainability and environmental awareness. Mac & PC systems, Sony cameras, & Insta360 panoramic cameras empower Paul Garrett Hugel to capture stunning visuals and support essential research.
Beyond the Island:
NKO.ORG’s commitment to using technology for good extends far beyond the island of Maui. Paul Garrett Hugel volunteers expertise in disaster tech and IT support. Playing a crucial role in responding to natural disasters in Hawaii and beyond.
