I am currently enrolled in Knight Center For Journalism of the Americas Massive Online Open Course: Social Media for Journalists. We completed the first module and on to the second with a focus on setup and configuring social media accounts. As a pre requisite I have to post to one of the forums presented in the class. One of the broad range of topics which i found interesting was storytelling with 1 minute of video or less. The following is the complete forum post of mine.
If 1 picture=1,000 words does 30fps x60sec=1,800,000 words?
Can one minute of raw video contain the data equivalent of one million eight hundred thousand descriptive words ? I present this as a potential question not a finite quality which can be mathematically proven. In referencing the proverb originally stated by the ancient Chinese “Chinese proverb. One picture is worth ten thousand words.” Although the original forum post asks for specific examples of stories I chose to go deeper in defining what is possible from a purely theoretical point of view.
If you must quantify a specific example I chose to reference the creation of our known universe, the galaxies, our sun, and the evolution of life on planet Earth. The sun which oddly enough does not go by a name unlike all the other stars which have been discovered and cataloged to date. “Our sun doesn’t have an official proper name, according to the International Astronomical Union. In antiquity, the names Sol and Helios referred to ancient sun gods and perhaps the sun itself”. Our sun may not have an official name but alas it does have an official symbol.
The one minute and 36 second example “Our Story in 1 minute” I give can be found on youtube.com
Please take the initiative to pause the video and click the gear icon and select quality 720P HD from the resolution pop up window offering the highest quality data intensive experience. If you wish to go deeper in exploration select the full screen option brackets to the right of name “YouTube” for a more substantial data emersion.
